After Friday’s victory over regular-season Big 12 baseball champion West Virginia, Arizona junior shortstop Mason White, of Salpointe Catholic, had moved into second in two impressive Arizona career statistical categories: second in home runs, 45, to Shelley Duncan’s 55, and second in career extra base hits, 106, to Dave Stegman’s 110 set in the 1970s.

Mason White, right, gets a congratulatory hand slap from Arizona coach Chip Hale after hitting one of his two home runs against West Virginia in the semifinals of the Big 12 Baseball Championship on Friday, May 23, 2025, at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
It’s my opinion that White is the second-best shortstop in school history, trailing just three-time All-American Eddie Leon of ´óÏóAPPHigh, 1965, 1966, 1967. You could make a case that White is challenging to be one of the 10 leading ´óÏóAPPplayers in UA baseball history.
The top three would be Leon, Ron Hassey of ´óÏóAPPHigh and Duncan of CDO. After that, there’s a crowd of about 10 more ´óÏóAPPall-stars to be considered: Robbie Moen of Flowing Wells; Ed Vosberg of Salpointe; Rich Hinton of Marana; Steve Strong of Sabino; Brad Tolson, Dave Baldwin and Roger Johnson of Tucson; George Arias of Pueblo; Dan Schneider of Rincon and Brian Anderson of CDO.

And now White.
Either way, White has made a lasting impact at Arizona. It is more impressive given that former Arizona head coach Jay Johnson did not offer White a scholarship before leaving for LSU in the summer of 2021.
