A small dog was rescued in a remote area of Cochise County over the weekend after staying with the body of its owner, a 60-year-old woman from California, authorities said.
The unidentified woman died in a rental vehicle about an hour northwest of Willcox near Muleshoe Ranch, Cochise County Sheriff鈥檚 Office Search & Rescue posted on . Willcox is about 90 miles east of Tucson.
The rental vehicle was due to be returned June 27.
On July 5, the team was able to find the person and rescue the dog, who had stayed near the vehicle and initially tried to avoid its rescuers, the post said.
鈥淚nitially it ran off, but the team was determined to save it and were able to catch it,鈥 the post said. 鈥淭he sweet little pup is currently at a shelter.鈥

One person who commented on the post, John Merten, recounted coming up to the scene.

鈥淚 stumbled upon this scene yesterday and was unable to catch the dog. I did feed him a sandwich and left water for him,鈥 Merten said. 鈥淚 feel terrible for what that dog endured.鈥
The team noted it is not the first time it had encountered a dog that has remained as the side of a dead owner.
鈥淭his truly shows the devotion and love a pet has for their person,鈥 the post said.
The Cochise County Sheriff鈥檚 Department received a call from the woman鈥檚 son Monday, who said he would be on his way from Boston to get Charlie, the family鈥檚 dog.
